Lessons Learned

Along the way I discover tasks and ways of managing my days … This page is a place to collect those lessons.

1. Begin again.

When a particular task or project is stalled (not progressing, no new inspirations, contributing to insanity!) embark on something new. Renew and refocus while taking a break (short nap, walk outside, reading, gardening, chatting with a friend, yoga, breath-work).

2. Divide and Conquer.

If the task or project involves “too much” or simply has become “lost” or “blurred” due to the magnitude (or surrounding clutter and stuff) collect a few items or a part of it and continue activity in another space. Today’s example: Packing for a trip. I have clothes e-v-e-r-ywhere! Ack! Some need washing, some folding, some even to be returned to the store … I am dividing and conquering! :-D just started a load of wash after sorting clothes into piles. Next, I will remove clothes (and other miscellaneous items) from the floor so I can practice yoga. Ahh …

3. Mentally declutter.

By writing down, typing, blogging, etc. my thoughts (which seem to ping around my brain like the smooth, metal balls in a pinball machine) I am able to focus. Focus on the tasks at hand, focus on the fact that my life (life in general) will never be perfect, focus on the now … And simply release the what-if’s, but’s and do-da’s of the past and future. Selah

4. Set a timer.

Deadlines are magic …  ;-)

5. Sing us a song; you’re the piano man.

Music — especially classical, for me — mutes the freight train noise of random thoughts.

6. Pause.

Relax via a quick 20-minute nap, ponder “off-topic” via a mental break, munch on chocolate chip cookies, talk with a friend (online, phone, text) walk in your garden on a hot summer day, randomly photograph clouds, listen to your favorite song(s) or any other task (or non-task) that resets your mind, reestablishes your rhythm, refreshes your being. ‘Cause … doing nothing (for brief, 15-20 minutes breaks) is the most “productive” part of your day! ;-)

7. What to do with Idea Volcanoes

Volcanoes may not be an appropriate image for the way ideas flow for right brain thinkers … As some of us have “eruptions” on a daily basis! ;-) So, whether you see the flow of your ideas as an explosive eruption or a steady, spring-fed stream — the random flow can be semi-harnessed in the following ways:

  • Log your ideas on Post-It® Notes, in a journal, on a blog, a .txt file — or whatever manner of record works for ya’!
  • Begin to filter random thoughts for themes, categories or applications. (Yes … There are common threads …)
  • Recognize ideas as pieces of a puzzle; each “piece” is part of a whole and builds upon other pieces.
  • Set aside time to log your ideas and random thoughts; organize or layout the “pieces” and work on your puzzle(s).

8. Get back to where you once belonged.

Totally unrelated lyrics. However, I can hear The Beatles urgin’ me ” … to get back” when I stall out. To get back — to resume — instead of erasing the proverbial chalkboard and starting all over. Just because we step off what we believe to {The Path} — all that is needed is to step back on said path. Or {gasp!} simply create a new shortcut to the main road! ;-)

9. Practice gratitude …

Even when you just want to have a pity party … I have been in the midst of these {impossible} moments — and I can attest to the liberty of pursuing gratitude: [link]

10. No excuses.

Push past what you claim is in the way. If you want a particular goal:

  • Be willing to let go of what you believe prevents you from attaining said goal.
  • Get to the particulars of attaining what you claim you want.
